UroLift

A minimally invasive treatment for enlarged prostate (BPH) that opens the urinary channel without cutting, heating or removing tissue.

What UroLift is

UroLift, also called prostatic urethral lift, uses small permanent implants to lift and hold enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra, like tying back a curtain. It treats the urinary symptoms of BPH, such as a weak stream, frequent urination and getting up at night, without removing prostate tissue.

Who it suits

UroLift is a good fit for many men whose symptoms are not well controlled by medicine, or who want to stop daily pills. It works best for small to moderate prostates, generally up to about 100 grams. Men who want to protect erections and ejaculation often prefer it, because UroLift has not been shown to cause new, lasting sexual side effects. Very large prostates may do better with plasma bipolar TURP, which Dr. Neal Patel also performs.

The procedure

The procedure usually takes under an hour and is done through the urethra with a thin scope, under local anesthesia or light sedation. There are no incisions. Most men go home the same day and many do not need a catheter afterward.

Recovery

Expect some burning, urgency, mild pelvic discomfort or a little blood in the urine for up to two to four weeks as things settle. Many men notice better flow within the first few weeks and return to normal activity within days.

Before UroLift

Dr. Neal Patel starts with a symptom score, a urine test, a bladder scan and often a look at the prostate's size and shape with ultrasound or cystoscopy, to make sure UroLift is the right choice for you.

Insurance

UroLift is covered by Medicare and most commercial plans when medical criteria are met; some plans require prior approval, which the Advanced Urology team handles. Call 678-344-8900 to check your coverage.

Preparing for your visit with Dr. Neal Patel

Bring a list of your current medications and supplements, any prior urine, blood or PSA results, and the reports (or discs) from recent imaging. If you can, arrive with a comfortably full bladder, because a urine sample and a bladder scan are often part of the first visit. Write down your main questions so nothing is missed. A family member is welcome to join you. If you prefer Spanish or Korean, let the office know when you book so language support is ready.

Your chart is reviewed before you arrive, and insurance requirements for likely imaging or procedures are checked up front so approvals can move sooner. Before you leave, your orders, prescriptions and follow-up plan are reviewed with you, and you receive education materials tailored to your condition.

At the end of the visit you will receive a written summary in your preferred language that explains what was found, what was ordered and what happens next. Your primary care physician or referring doctor receives a clear update letter with findings, plan and next steps, so everyone caring for you stays informed. Dr. Neal Patel sees patients at the Johns Creek and Cumming offices; call 678-344-8900.
